"In the chorus of 'Light Year,' Parker reflects on his journey, singing, 'How did I get here? Feels like a light year.' He is stunned that, after all these years, he has finally reached his destination, questioning how he got there. The song explores feelings of being left behind as others progress and the loneliness of life on tour.
Parker draws a parallel between his life on tour and a space expedition, singing, 'Feels like a light year,' to allude to how time on tour seems fleeting. The days end unexpectedly and quickly, leaving Parker constantly saying goodbye to loved ones—both those he meets on tour and those he leaves behind at home. He regretfully sings, 'I’ll leave you behind now,' echoing the sentiment of astronauts bidding farewell to their loved ones before a mission. When Parker sings, 'I finally came down,' it marks the end of his journey. By saying “came down,” the analogy of landing a spaceship is paralleled with the emotions he is experiencing of “coming down” in his state of mind and mood.
The grandeur of touring is starkly contrasted by the loneliness Parker feels when he returns to an empty home, much like an astronaut left alone after a mission. This loneliness stems from his inability to nurture relationships due to the constant demands of touring. While others in his hometown continue to grow and progress, Parker feels left behind, isolated on his 'hill.' He gestures to his friends, inviting them to 'climb to the top of my hill,' urging them to see the world from his lonely perspective.
Lyrics
Come down on me I won't be anyone else
Clip time with me, ride with me chasing my thrills
He's leaving me, even you and everyone else
It seems it's getting worse, but who can really tell
Stepping outside now
I'll leave you behind now
I finally came down
I'm ready to let it all out
How did I get here?
Feels like a light year
I should have no fear
Yet my hands are slick
How did I get here?
Feels like a light year
I should have no fear
Yet my hands are slick
Look down on me, but try to be there for me still
Doesn't really seem like you're loving yourself
Why don't you climb to the top of my hill
And rest up your legs on the stone
Stepping outside now
I'll leave you behind now
I finally came down
I'm ready to let it all out
How did I get here?
Feels like a light year
I should have no fear
Yet my hands are slick
How did I get here?
Feels like a light year
I should have no fear
Yet my hands are slick
Never try to lie to me 'cause you will fuck up everything
Toss a number in my lottery
You aren't who you try to be, no
Never try to lie to me 'cause you will fuck up everything
Toss a number in my lottery
You aren't who you try to be at all
Never try to lie to me, don't fuck up everything
Toss a number in my lottery
You aren't who you wanna be
How did I get here?
Feels like a light year
I should have no fear
Yet my hands are slick
How did I get here?
Feels like a light year
I should have no fear
Yet my hands are slick
How did I get here?
Feels like a light year
I should have no fear
Yet my hands are slick
How did I get here?
Feels like a light year
