The reminder that Derek is a real Matchbox 20 fan, "Listen to Matchbox" is by rapturously singing the band's name to set the scene in State Champs' song "Light Blue." It's smart in a way that "Light Blue" references the Matchbox 20 song, "3AM." Derek's lyric "and won't let the day waste away, while I'm thinking about you again, but now it's 3am," smartly shows that he is up all night thinking about his memories that have pulled him back to when he was in love, while also alluding to the Matchbox 20 song.
This song, "Light Blue" reminds me of clear, blue skies and vibing to my favourite summer tracks. Like Bearings, Trophy Eyes, Neck Deep, State Champs and The Story So Far. They all have the quintessential pop-punk feel to them. Which makes them perfect for summer days.
Although I have never mastered skateboarding. It reminds me of skateboarding down an empty street with my sunglasses on and cruising to the aforementioned band's songs. It makes me want to blast the music loud, just smile and live my life. Although it has a care-free sound, the meaning behind it can instill a sense of recounting memories that pull you in and not wanting to dwell on those memories.
The chorus blasts through with guitars and Derek's belting of, "Lovesick from light blue." Derek could be summoning reminders of being in love while in the backdrop of light blue skies that rests within his vision. He admits that the feeling of being free and under the blue sky is "intoxicating." The strange feelings that a memory has occurred, but one is unsure if it has occurred is mentioned when Derek says gently, "Deja vu keeps creeping in."
Derek makes himself vulnerable to falling in love when he says, "Who am I to think that I'm immune?" He is suggesting that sometimes he is unstoppable, but when these feelings start to creep in, the memories come back to his vision when he becomes "lovesick."
Like the sky, the memories persist to evoke an emotional pull. The memories are always present and simmer in the background, waiting to be admired. When the sky is most beautiful, Derek cannot help but feel the pull of his memories of when he was in love. Which draws him back to once treasured memories he had saved, but now are distant.
I think the song is about reminiscing in memories of being in love, but not wanting to smother yourself in these memories, because you've already moved on with your life. But you can’t help but to be emotionally attached to those memories because they hold so much nostalgia to them.
Lyrics - Light Blue State Champs
[Verse 1]
I can go to the boardwalk without a reminder in the waves
Drive up to Woodstock and know that you won't get in my way
Listen to Matchbox (Listen to Matchbox)
And won't let the day waste away while I'm thinking about you again
But now it's 3 a.m
[Pre-Chorus]
It looks like I'll be sleeping in (Hey)
Déjà vu keeps creeping in (Hey)
But I surrender, nothing I can do
'Cause damn, I get so
[Chorus]
Lovesick from light blue (Light blue)
You know I just get constant notes of you (Of you)
Was it all worth it?
Seems like just yesterday
It's so intoxicating
Never faded
Hate the way that I'm still lovesick from light blue
[Verse 2]
I can tap in a rebound with somebody new in your old seat
Order a few rounds, still managе to shake these mеmories, yeah
But I know when we're face to face
Something always would fill the space
What could've been wore off to what might never be
[Pre-Chorus]
It looks like I'll be sleeping in (Hey)
Déjà vu keeps creeping in (Hey)
But who am I to think that I'm immune?
'Cause damn, I get so
[Chorus]
Lovesick from light blue (Light blue)
You know I just get constant notes of you (Of you)
Was it all worth it?
Seems like just yesterday
It's so intoxicating
Never faded
Hate the way that I'm still lovesick from light blue
[Bridge]
Play back that weekend in SoHo
That soon enough we would outgrow
I relive it in slow-mo
But we both know
[Pre-Chorus]
It looks like I'll be sleeping in (Sleeping in)
Déjà vu keeps creeping in (Creeping in)
It looks like I'll be sleeping in (Hey)
Déjà vu keeps creeping in (Hey)
But who am I to think that I'm immune
God damn, I get so
